Do I sit back and wait for the money?

 

Unfortunately not. You must be prepared to work at your new site to make money from it. To make money from your site you need to get visitors and lots of them. In order to get visitors you are going to need to promote your site. Imagine you opened a shop but didn't tell anyone where it was - how many customers would you get?

If you built your shop on the High Street then you would get the passing trade and customers who went to the High Street looking for a shop like yours. The online equivalent is the search engine (such as google and yahoo). Most of your traffic will come from them. However to get traffic from the search engines you will need a good place on the list for your relevant keywords.

Relevent Keywords

Keywords are words people use when seaching the internet. If you have a site on Poker, your relevent keywords would be "poker", "Texas Hold 'em" , "Starting Hands" etc. etc. The best way to get good rankings on the search engines for your keywords is to get as many sites as possible linking to you with those keywords. For example: Texas Hold 'em

The only way people are going to link to you is if you email them and ask. You need to put in the time emailing to get the results. All webmasters know this and they welcome link exchanges - where they link to you and you link back in return.

Promoting your site

Your time won't be spent just emailing webmasters. There are other ways of promoting your site, such as getting your site listed on directories and visiting forums. A word of caution: just visiting a forum and putting a link to your site, won't do you much good. Consider this:

You have bought a Blackjack site. You visit a gambling forum and find a thread on Blackjack. Someone has asked a question on card-counting, for example. Answer that question and put a link to you site where the principle is "explained further". If that thread gets 900 views how many will click on the link and visit your site? It's worth finding out!
